GWA Summer Movie Time!

  • 15 August 2016

218px-1_rio_de_janeiro_slum_2010The Summer Olympics are underway right now in Rio de Janiero.  However, the long road to the event has not been a smooth one, with many complaints about corruption, Zika virus, sewage, and crime.  What gets overlooked in the Western media is the extreme poverty in the city, especially housing, which is a pressing problem for many Rio residents.  As a matter of fact, squatters were forced out of an abandoned apartment complex last year to make way for building a hotel for Olympics participants.

And that is just the tip of the iceberg for social issues those in Rio are facing.  Check out this short film about life in the favelas.
