Is there a future for a smartphone that is both conflict mineral-free AND reduces e-waste?
Dutch social entrepreneur Bas van Abel may have found the solution to creating an ethical and environmentally friendly mobile with Fairphone, which sources its minerals through nonprofit mineral programs like the Conflict Free Tin Initiative and Solutions For Hope.
The mobile is built to be durable and repairable, which extends its life cycle. The back of the phone can easily come off and components can be replaced.
Fairphone is currently sold in Europe and is scheduled to be released in the United States next year.
Van Abel himself admits that Fairphone doesn’t exactly have all the qualities found in an iPhone, but it is a step in the right direction towards making the world a greener, more peaceful place to live in!
